Opening Ceremony of the Summer School Kebumen UNESCO Global Geopark
Karangsambung, Kebumen - The Opening Ceremony of the Summer School Kebumen UNESCO Global Geopark 2026 was officially held at the Kampus Geologi Luk Ulo Karangsambung on Wednesday, May 7, 2026.
The event was officially opened by the Regent of Kebumen Regency Mrs. Lilis Nuryani, marking the beginning of an international academic and cultural exchange program focused on geopark development, geotourism, environmental conservation, and sustainable community empowerment.
The opening ceremony was attended by the Head of the Tourism and Culture Office of Kebumen Regency, Mr. Frans Haidar and other representatives from related government agencies, academics, researchers, and invited guests from various institutions.
A total of 52 participants from various countries around the world Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, India) are taking part in the Summer School program. The participants consist of college student who share a common interest in geology, geoparks, environmental sustainability, and cultural heritage.
In her opening remarks, the Regent of Kebumen Regency expressed appreciation to ITB and UNS for the implementation of the international program in Kebumen and emphasized the importance of global collaboration in promoting sustainable development through geoparks.
The Summer School Kebumen Geopark activities will include Symposium, field excursions, academic discussions, cultural exchanges, and direct exploration of the geological diversity and community-based tourism potential within the Kebumen UNESCO Global Geopark area such as Watu Kelir Seboro and Menganti Ayah.
The program reflects Kebumen’s commitment to strengthening international cooperation and promoting sustainable tourism, education, and conservation through geopark initiatives.
